Why the Best Forex Candidates Are Rarely Active Applicants
In a small, connected industry, the strongest senior candidates are not on job boards. If you want to reach them, the approach has to be different.
The most capable senior people in Forex, CFDs, prop trading and spread betting are usually employed, reasonably content and not looking. That is not a coincidence. Stability, equity, long tenure and reputation all accumulate in a small industry, and the people who have earned them are careful about when and how they move.
For a hiring business, this is the central challenge: the candidates you most want are the ones least likely to apply.
Why active applicants and strong candidates diverge
The moment a role is advertised, it attracts a particular population — people who are between roles, people actively planning a move, and people who apply broadly. Some are excellent. But advertising alone systematically under-samples the passive market, which is where much of the experienced leadership sits.
In a connected industry there is a second effect. Senior people are visible. Applying to an advertised role, or even registering with a recruiter, can become known. For someone with a good position, the downside of a careless approach can outweigh the upside of a conversation.
What a discreet approach looks like
Reaching these candidates is not about volume. It is about credibility and control.
- The approach comes from someone who understands the business, not a researcher reading a script.
- The opportunity is explained honestly, including its risks and its reporting line.
- The candidate’s details go nowhere without their explicit approval for that specific role.
- The first conversation is a genuine conversation, not a qualification call.
When that is done well, passive candidates will engage. They are not opposed to moving. They are opposed to being handled carelessly.
What this means if you are the candidate
If you are senior and not actively looking, you do not need to be. A single confidential conversation can tell you whether the market values what you have built, what a realistic next step looks like, and what you would want a role to offer before you would consider it.
There is no obligation to apply, no obligation to be represented, and no cost to you at any point. Registering simply keeps you informed when something genuinely relevant appears.
What this means if you are hiring
If the role matters, do not rely on the active market alone. Assume the right person is employed and not looking, and build a process that reaches them credibly and discreetly. That is the difference between filling a vacancy and making the right appointment.
